For the first time in 7 years, I reunite with my college friend Mekela for an honest and raw conversation about how our relationship fractured after the 2016 election due to polarizing political differences. Our story represents the millions of relationships strained by those divisive times.
What started as fundamental disagreements over core issues like abortion turned into a chasm between us, fueled by hardened stances and a lack of nuance on both sides. But years later, having both experienced profound personal growths, we come together to rebuild.
In this powerful dialogue, Mekela courageously unpacks her deconstruction journey - from her conservative, pro-life upbringing to the catalytic moment she began questioning the harmful purity culture teachings of her faith. This awakening led her to fundamentally reevaluate her beliefs through an intersectional lens as a Black woman.
